My friend Kate was just starting her new job in the spring of 2024 as a Program Manager when I got laid off. She had been unemployed for 6 months after being laid off from her 7-year career at Charles Schwab in the fall of 2023, and I wanted to understand what the most critical advice was to land a new gig.
Although there was no silver bullet, the three most impactful strategies to landing a new gig were:
1. Be first to apply
2. Don’t rely on LinkedIn to post the job first because it’s probably old - use Google.
3. Have a good resume with lots of certifications and common words they’re looking for (i.e. PMP, PMI-ACP, agile, etc).
Focus first on applying for jobs that were posted within the last 24 to 72 hours, that way your resume will be reviewed by recruiters first with less of a possibility that the role has already been filled.
Most people only use one or two platforms to search for jobs. Maybe you only feel comfortable searching and applying through Indeed or LinkedIn. Google is getting smarter and is becoming one of the strongest search tools for finding timely and targeted jobs. You can even set Google job alerts to keep updated on the latest job postings across the internet.
A strong resume is obvious, but having common words in your resume that align with the job description for which you are applying to may take some time. If there is a job you really want, edit your resume to ensure you're capturing all the key words that way you have a better chance of bypassing the applicant tracking system in the event the employer is using one.
